1.Community assembly theory assumes that ecological communities are spatially delimited into patches. Within these patches, coexistence results from environmental filtering, competition, and immigration. En 1987, l'analyse du système d'élevage en continu menée par l' IFREMER tant sur les fermes guyanaises que sur la station expérimentale de Kourou a permis de mettre en évidence les limites et les faiblesses de ce mode d'élevage. Elle a montré la nécessité d'un meilleur contrôle du cheptel depuis l'ensemencement jusqu'à la commercialisation afin de pouvoir atteindre de manière fiable des rendements de l'ordre de 2,5 T/ha/an.

Annotated checklist of the herpetofauna of Petit Saut, Sinnamary River, French Guiana Naturalis

The Mission Radeau des Cimes to Petit Saut, French Guiana, offered the opportunity to study the herpetofauna of the canopy of the tropical rainforest, an area hardly studied sofar. Two localities at heights of 30 and 35 m could be studied, whereas data on a third site were obtained through information from other participants. The herpetological results of the research in the canopy were meagre. Only the frog Hyla leucophyllata (Beireis) and the lizard Mabuya bistriata (Spix) were observed in the canopy. Additionally the terrestrial herpetofauna was studied extensively and turned out to contain some species that had not been reported before from French Guiana. Brachyuran crab community structure and associated sediment reworking activities in pioneer and young mangroves of French Guiana, South America ArchiMer

This study in French Guiana evaluates the changes of crab assemblages and their bioturbation activities between mangrove early stages (pioneer and young mangrove) and within stages by taking their spatial heterogeneity (tidal channels, flat areas, pools) into account. The results show differences in crab assemblage structure between and within the early stages of mangrove in relation to microhabitat and sediment characteristics. The sediment reworking rates are a function of the biomass or density of particular species (Ucides cordatus, Uca cumulanta) and burrower functional groups. Comments on the type specimen of Dracaena guianensis Daudin, 1801 (Reptilia: Sauria: Teiidae), and rediscovery of the species in French Guiana Naturalis

A discussion on the whereabouts of the holotype of Dracaena guianensis is given, and its rediscovery in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands (RMNH) and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Anatomie Comparée, Paris, France (MNHN-AC) is reported. The RMNH possesses a stuffed specimen, of which the left forelimb has been amputated in life and of which the skull is no longer present in the specimen. The Paris museum possesses a skull that fits the Leiden specimen. Thus, the stuffed specimen and the skull together form the complete holotype, each object can be considered a “schizotype” of the holotype. Measuring leaf gas exchange from canopy leaves is fundamental for our understanding of photosynthesis and for a realistic representation of carbon uptake in vegetation models. Since canopy leaves are often difficult to reach, especially in tropical forests with emergent trees up to 60 m at remote places, canopy access techniques such as canopy cranes or towers have facilitated photosynthetic measurements. The estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) zone occurs in river estuaries due to the effects of tidal dynamics, density-driven residual circulation and deposition/erosion of fine sediments. Even though tropical river estuaries contribute proportionally more to the sediment supply of coastal areas, the ETM in them has been hardly studied. Enzymatic polymorphism study as help for constitution of initial broodstock for a new cultivated finfish species. ArchiMer

Leporinus friderici is a South American promising species for fish culture. In French Guiana the "morphological species", L. friderici, L. granti, L. lebaili and L. affinis steyermarki are found. Their identification is sometimes difficult on usual criterion. To constitute an initial broodstock of L. friderici from local wild populations, the genetic structure of these species was studied. Fifteen enzyme systems, representing twenty loci, were screened.

On the extremely turbid waters of French Guyana, the high-resolution satellite imagery (300 m) seems a very good tool for monitoring coastal and estuarine waters. It is possible to adjust the algorithms and calculation methods to be in the range of values suggested by in-situ measurements and thus, have the long data series, where P90chla and P90turbi parameters can be calculated on the MEC.

Four new combinations in Chomelia and Stenostomum (Rubiaceae, Guettardeae) from Central America, the Guianas and the Amazon Basin Naturalis

According to current generic delimitations, supported by wood anatomy, palynology, and recent molecular phylogenies, Antirhea, traditionally treated as a Pantropical genus, is instead restricted to the Paleotropics. At the same time, the Neotropical species traditionally positioned in Antirhea should be positioned in Stenostomum. Following these definitions, Stenostomum is a genus with most of the species present in the Caribbean Region, and two species present in the Guianas, namely S. acreanum and S. guianensis, distributed throughout the Amazon Basin. In addition, according to these new generic delimitations, two species previously positioned in Guettarda and Antirhea need to be transferred to Chomelia, as C. triflora and C. ulei.

Géochimie du mercure dans le continuum de la retenue de Petit-Saut et de l'estuaire du Sinnamary, Guyane française ArchiMer

The mercury cycle was explored in the Petit-Saut reservoir / Sinnamary Estuary continuum in French Guiana. Main processes involve (i) photo-induced reduction, (ii) adsorption and desorption at the particle surfaces, (iii) methylating bacterial activity, (iv) precipitation and dissolution of iron oxyhydroxides and sulfides. Sources of mercury to the Petit-Saut reservoir consist of the partly impacted river-tributaries, the atmospheric deposition and the flooded soils or vegetation. Once into the reservoir, divalent mercury undergoes a large spectrum of transformations including speciation and phase changes. Geographic distribution of Hemigrammus ora (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae) in the Amazon basin, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.

New records of Hemigrammus ora Zarske, Le Bail & Géry, 2006, previously believed to be endemic to the French Guiana drainages, are confirmed for Brazilian drainages. The species is reported from the Tocantins-Araguaia system and lower Amazon River. Morphometric and meristic data, previously undescribed morphological traits related to caudal-fin squamation and anal-fin hooks, and geographic variation are presented for the species.

Guatteria richardii (Annonaceae) rediscovered along with two new species from French Guiana Naturalis

For the first time, 140 years after the collection of the first specimen and 70 years after the description of Guatteria richardii R.E. Fr. from French Guiana, more specimens that are referable to this species were discovered during a taxonomic treatment for the Flora of the Guianas project, concerning Guatteria Ruiz & Pav. (Annonaceae). In addition, G. intermedia and G. montis-trinitatis, two similar species – the first widely distributed and the second endemic to the Montagne de la Trinité in French Guiana, are described as new to science.

Heavy metals distribution in mangrove sediments along the mobile coastline of French Guiana ArchiMer

The accumulation of nine heavy metals in fine-grained sediments from the mangrove fringed coast of French Guiana is evaluated. The dynamic features of the South American tropical coastline, from the Amazon to the Orinoco Rivers, result in mangrove sediments being alternately submitted to phases of erosion and net sedimentation a few tens of years long. This process influences the distribution of the heavy metals associated with these frequently re-mobilized deposits. Late quaternary paleoceanography of the French Guiana continental shelf: Clay-mineral evidence ArchiMer

Marine muds deposited on the French Guiana coast mostly originate in the Amazon. Recent sediments are composed of (a) illite (33 %) and chlorite (13 %) of Andean mountain origin; and (b) kaolinite (28 %) and smectite (26 %), principally from the Amazonian lowlands but also from the Guiana Shield. In the coastal mud prism, high-resolution seismic profiles, together with sedimentological, micropaleontological and soil engineering studies, supplemented by C-14 dates, permitted a stratigraphic interpretation of eight cores. Les minéraux lourds des sables du littoral de la Guyane française : bilan sur l’origine des dépôts de la plate-forme des Guyanes ArchiMer

The distribution of heavy minerals on beaches and beach ridges sands of French Guiana shows three distinct suites from East to West: amphibole (largely dominant), staurolite, epidote and pyroxene off the Cayenne region, tourmaline and amphibole mainly off the Kourou-Mana, garnet, staurolite and tourmaline off the Mana-Maroni. A very good continuity exists between the assemblages of heavy minerals from the catchment area parent-rocks, the fluviatile sediments, the coastal zone and the shelf. The results of this study indicate and strengthen a local origin for the sandy sediments and do not support a possibility of an Amazonian source.
